Beat Signer is Professor of Computer Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium, where
he is co-director of the Web & Information Systems Engineering laboratory (WISE).
With his team consisting of Dr. Bruno Dumas and
Lode Hoste he is investigating
cross-media information spaces and architectures,
interactive paper and augmented reality solutions as
well as multimodal and multi-touch interaction frameworks.
His research interests further include web information systems, document engineering, ubiquitous and tangible computing, object databases and software engineering.
Beat has been local organiser of the CAiSE 2001 conference, proceedings editor of the CoPADD 2006 and CoPADD 2007 workshops and he is a member of ACM, IEEE, DBTA and
the Digital Pen and Paper Society.
As part of his PhD thesis, Beat he investigated fundamental concepts for interactive paper and cross-media
information spaces resulting in the general resource-selector-link (RSL) metamodel that generalises document
and open hypermedia models. The iServer platform
represents our implementation of the RSL model
that can be extended by different resource plug-ins for integrating different types of physical and digital media.
As part of the European Paper++
and PaperWorks projects, Beat developed the interactive
paper (iPaper) framework for integrating paper and digital services and information. Different solutions
for innovative forms of interactive paper document publishing have been realised and the iPaper framework
has been applied in a variety of applications
including PaperPoint,
EdFest,
Generosa Enterprise,
the Lost Cosmonaut,
Print-n-Link,
PaperProof and other
solutions. We also recently released iGesture a general framework for
gesture recognition under an open source license. Based on the experience that we gained from realising the interactive
paper applications, Beat is currently investigating general design patterns and paper widgets for the new
type of paper-digital user interfaces.
More recently, Beat started to extend the RSL metamodel, to deal not only with navigational cross-media linking,
but also enable the structural representation of new forms of cross-media documents and information spaces. Furthermore, the open source iGesture framework is currently
extended to support new types of gestures (e.g. 3D gestures).

| Fundamental Concepts for Interactive Paper and Cross-Media Information Spaces |
| Book Description |
While there have been dramatic increases in the use of digital technologies for information storage, processing
and delivery over the last twenty years, the affordances of paper have ensured its retention as a key information
medium. In this book we review a wide variety of projects and technological developments for bridging the
paper-digital divide. We present our information-centric approach for a tight integration of paper and digital
information that builds on a general cross-media information platform. Different innovative augmented paper
applications that have been developed based on our interactive paper platform and Anoto Digital Pen and Paper
technology are introduced. For example, these applications include a mobile interactive paper-based tourist
information system (EdFest) and a paper-digital presentation tool (PaperPoint). Challenges and solutions for
new forms of interactive paper and cross-media publishing are discussed. The book is targeted at developers
and researchers in information systems, hypermedia and human computer interaction, professionals from the
printing and publishing industry as well as readers with a general interest in the future of paper. |

Beat Signer studied computer science at ETH Zurich and did his Diploma Thesis (M.Sc.)
in the Global Information Systems group.
In his diploma project, he developed an object-oriented GUI
for the object model multi-user extended file system (GOMES).
Based on XML-RPC a remote object
mechanism was designed and employed in order to communicate in a machine and programming
language independent manner allowing the Java-based GOMES application to use
the whole functionality of the extended file system implemented in Oberon.
He finished his PhD thesis on fundamental concepts for interactive paper and cross-media
information spaces in August 2005.
